“The Bank of Ideas” (an empty UBS office block) is squatted by Occupy London activists and has been transformed into a free community art and learning center. People come & go, and many seem to leave ‘artistic expressions’ that ~ in its diversity ~ highlight what this movement is about and reveal emergent memes of a subculture of people who want real change. The pictures speak for themselves.
A few years back I watched Julia Butterfly Hill speak about our concept of away, and I was struck by the question ‘where is away?’. I was compulsively asking myself this question each time I threw, pushed or flushed things away, trying to imagine where my rubbish, my inner junk, and my shit would end up. Fascinated about ‘where is away?’ I began making the question visible…
Humanity existing only for a fractious moment.
Like an explosion, expanding from a tiny centre
Instantly disseminating into vast space
I am a tiny particle
On the edge of the explosion
Sensing the space into which it unfolds,
Shaping it as it unravels.
